Rach's DIY buddy Kristan Cunningham demonstrates several ways to max out the space in a tiny room or apartment and get rid of that cramped feeling.

  • Kristan's first step is to pick a canopy bed (from West Elm) which creates an architectural wall. She hangs a curtain behind the headboard frame creating a division between the bedroom and the living room. "You can even hang artwork from the frame," she says.

  • The second tip is to pick furniture that serves double duty. Kristan chooses tables which serve as night stands and end tables, so you can slide them back and forth between bedroom and living room. "We haven't taken up twice the floor space; we've only used that floor space once," she says.

  • For the living room, Kristan has another double-duty suggestion. "By choosing a daybed instead of a sofa, you get a guest room and a living room."

  • Bookcases which are finished on both sides can be a great way to divide a room while giving you lots of storage space at the same time.

  • Another way to create a division or "wall" in a small space is by using sliding curtains (available at Ikea). Kristan says, "They install right into the ceiling or you can hang them from a wall."
